Astral Traveling - Understanding the Out of Body Experience

Thought to have existed for centuries, astral travel or astral projection is the ability to have one’s astral body separate from one’s physical body. The astral body, though not recognized by certain cultures, is something most practitioners of the phenomenon believe we all have. Traveling the astral plane may be done for various reasons and can be either spontaneous or induced. Often closely tied with the afterlife and other paranormal phenomena, astral travel is a much more defined experience that is often misunderstood. It is something of heated debate throughout the world, although many cultures have practiced it for centuries.

Many seek the experience for spiritual reasons, while others find themselves unexpectedly in the throes of an out of body experience. The acknowledgement of an “astral body” is not common to all cultures, making it a difficult experience for many to cope with. Followers of certain religions denounce this and similar phenomena, as they believe them to be contrary to the teachings of their religion. While mainstream science often dismisses the phenomenon of astral travel, it is estimated that around 15% of the population has experienced it. The lack of scientific study often makes it difficult for many to come to terms with its existence.

Spontaneous out of body experiences often occur during a time of trauma, like after a violent car accident. It can be shocking to be in the midst of an experience about which you have no understanding or knowledge. It is not uncommon for people to find themselves floating above their own body as they lie in a hospital bed in a severe state of trauma. For this reason, astral travel is often associated with near death experiences. Those experiencing spontaneous astral travel or out of body experiences can easily become overwhelmed by them, causing many to seek out more information on the subject.

Often, astral travel is achieved as a premeditated experience, with the help of outside stimuli. Hypnosis and meditation are common ways of inducing astral travel. People seek out the experience for various reasons and it has been associated with spiritual practices of certain cultures for centuries. Wherever your interest lies, it is still a controversial subject that many denounce. Experiencing astral travel or related phenomena can be confusing to those with little knowledge on the subject. Those that seek it out can find it to be a spiritually enlightening practice. As the astral plane itself isn’t acknowledged by all cultures, it can be difficult to find confirmation of the existence of astral travel.
